Watch the Full Moon Rise from Kings Park

The following dates have been chosen for the best times to see a full moon rise from vantage points on Fraser Avenue overlooking Perth City and the Perth Hills.

Some full Moon rises are over the direction of the cityscape and others are over the direction of the river and South Perth.

On some dates throughout the year, the actual full moon rises too close to sunset, so the sky is not dark enough to provide a spectacular view. In these cases, the next evening has been selected.

The times below are the moment the Moon rises from the horizon. However, due to the Perth Hills, the time the moon becomes visible is delayed by 5-15 minutes depending on which direction the Moon rises from.

If the Moon rises due east, it will take another 5-10 minutes for it to be visible. If the Moon rises towards the south east or north east, it will take another 10-15 minutes to be visible above Perth Hills.

Blue Moon

A Blue Moon is when we have two full moons in one calendar month, so the second one is called a Blue Moon as it is a rare occurrence

Super Moon

How a supermoon works is like this: because the Moon’s orbit around Earth is slightly oval-shaped or elliptical, every month, there’s a time when the Moon is at its closest distance to Earth (perigee) and another time when it is at its furthest distance from Earth (apogee). A supermoon is when the Moon is closest (at perigee), and a micromoon is when the Moon is at its furthest (apogee).

Kings Park Total Lunar Eclipse

There’s a Total lunar eclipse on 3rd March 2026. For Western Australian observers, the eclipse commences before moon rise. At moon rise, observers will see the partial eclipse underway. Shortly after at 7.04pm, the Moon will begin to turn a stunning red/coppery colour, but you may have to wait until the night sky darkens more after sunset to see the full effect.

If you’re watching from Kings Park, due to the height of the Perth Hills, the time when the moon becomes visible is delayed by 5-15 minutes. In addition, the moon will rise over the cityscape and some of the buildings may hinder visibility.

Here are the key times calculated for Perth:

  • 4.44pm – penumbral eclipse begins (below the horizon in WA)
  • 5.50pm – partial eclipse begins (below the horizon until 6.43pm in WA)
  • 6.43pm – moon rise
  • 7.04pm – total eclipse begins
  • 7.33pm – maximum eclipse
  • 8.02pm – total eclipse ends
  • 9.17pm – partial eclipse ends
  • 10.23pm – penumbral eclipse ends
