Star Tracks Events FAQ’s

What if it’s cloudy or raining?

If it is cloudy or wet, our astronomy guides will make sure guests still have a great night with some engaging alternative activities. Marvel at an interactive presentation about the cosmos, on the big screen, that encourages audience involvement. Get hands on around telescopes with an inside demonstration to discover how they work. We have fun space games for kids plus a special space quiz. If there is patchy cloud, we recommend going ahead, as our guides a very good at still getting the most out of the sky with their telescopes. With just a bit of patience the clouds often pass over objects, before they are then clear to look at through the telescopes. As visitors may have booked accommodation, it’s recommended to go ahead regardless of weather, however if you would prefer to cancel if the weather looks like it will be cloudy or wet, this decision can be made approximately six hours prior to the start of the event. If you do decide to cancel, we will work with you to reschedule your event and find a suitable new date.

Do you operate with a full moon?

Yes! On evenings with the full moon, we are still able to view planets, stars, and deep space objects with our telescopes. The moon’s brightness does impact the amount of stars we see compared to a completely dark night, but often times it is still more stars than what most people are able to view at home in a city. When it is a full moon, we also spend some time looking at the moon up-close with our telescopes. Evenings with a brighter Moon add a different flavour to a stargazing experience. The Moon makes a wonderful focal point for presentations, discussions and Q&A. A full Moon rising is particularly spectacular in country WA with expansive horizons and sunset colours with the full Moon rise. Objects such as planets, brighter star clusters and nebulae are not impacted by the moonlight.

Do you run incursions for schools?

Yes! We regularly run stargazing events for schools. Our night school astronomy and stargazing incursions are suitable for all students, and their families too! Linking to the West Australian Science Curriculum. We can also cater to Home Schooling groups, schools camps and other educational organisations or events.

What time do your stargazing events start?

Start times change throughout the year as we work with the timing of sunset, and generally start half an hour after that, to ensure you have lovely dark skies. Our program generally runs for 2.5hrs and we will work with you to determine a suitable date for the evening stargazing experience. No matter which date you choose, we will get the best from the night sky for everyone to enjoy.
